Record shark caught off Cornwall!

An estimated 300lb blue shark has smashed the British record for the species.

The huge predator – that was released after capture – was caught by John Dines during a trip aboard Bite Adventures out of Penzance in Cornwall.

Although it wasn’t officially weighed, it was measured and given a weight for length estimate of 256lb. But experienced skipper Robin Chapman is convinced it was much, much bigger and could have been close to the incredible 300lb mark.

“It went off like a steam train,” said Robin. “The fish came up to the surface and dived back down five or six times, but luckily the 400lb wire and size 10/0 hook held firm. It was a massive fish.”

John’s shark will now be considered by officials as a new catch-and-release record.

The current British best for the species stands at 214lb with a fish caught from Looe in 1959.
